Chemistry Research at its Best

"Chemistry research at its best" — this is what Chemical & Engineering News called work by IIC and and two dozen other examples of important research advances for 2007, in its December 24, 2007 issue. The journal highlighted work by Conrad Zhang and his IIC coworkers to use a chromium chloride catalyst in an ionic liquid solvent to catalytically convert glucose to 5-hyrdoxymethylful. HMF and its derivatives can serve as fuel precursors and can replace petroleum-based building blocks used to make some plastics, pharmaceuticals, and chemicals.

Chemical & Engineering News is a publication of the American Chemical Society. To read more about the chromium chloride catalyst research, check out the article in Science Magazine.
